CAMDEN – After a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Camden Yacht Club resumes its free Sunset Seminar series on July 7 with the historic one-design class boats of Penobscot Bay, presented by Alec Brainerd.
Co-founder of Rockport’s Artisan Boatworks, Brainerd will discuss the historic one-design class boats of Penobscot Bay at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7 at the Camden Yacht Club and streamed online.
Brainerd’s presentation will include photographs of the various classic yachts, historic one-designs and sailing boats that Artisan Boatworks has built and restored over the past 20 years. The 1915 Camden Class Knockabout and the Haj Class that raced at CYC from 1933 to the 1980s will be included. The photographs are the work of photographers Allison Langley, Benjamin Mendlowitz and Billy Black.
Brainerd grew up in Brooksville, cruising small boats in Penobscot Bay before GPS and cell phones. His sailing experiences include the crew on the 137 foot schooner Roseway in Camden and the USVI, countless deliveries and crew aboard the 94 foot ketch Sumrun and victory in the Atlantic Challenge Cup from New York to Falmouth. , in England. Prior to founding Artisan Boatworks with his wife Erin, he worked at Rockport Marine and with Rockport Wind Jammer Operator Nigel Bower to build the 53 foot schooner John Alden Heron.
Brainerd will talk about the relevance of wood as a building material in 21st century boats. He will answer questions from the public regarding the maintenance and supply of wooden boats.
The Sunset 2021 seminar series runs from July 7 to August 25 on Wednesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. The conferences are free and open to the public.
