STOCKHOLM, June 2 (Xinhua) — A United Nations (UN) environment meeting that kicked off here on Thursday called for urgent and socially inclusive climate action.
The meeting, titled “Stockholm+50: A healthy planet for prosperity for all — our responsibility, our opportunity”, comes as the world faces the triple crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. .
It is set fifty years after Sweden hosted the first United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972.
“The developed countries pollute and have polluted the most. But the poorest are the hardest hit,” Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said in her opening speech.
“The climate transition can only happen if it is done in a social and inclusive way. It is not just an option. It is our moral obligation.” she says.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that global well-being is at risk, “largely because we have failed to deliver on our environmental promises”.
“We must change course now and end our senseless and suicidal war on nature,” he said.
The two-day event, convened by the United Nations and hosted by Sweden with the support of the Government of Kenya, will also serve as a springboard for the implementation of the United Nations Decade of Action to achieve its Sustainable Development Goals. . ■
